Specific nightmares can often be recurring. Once you address the issues in your bad dream and understand your nightmare you will not have it again. This may be motivation enough to acknowledge the problems your nightmare is bringing to your attention.
The emotion will tell you a great deal about what the symbol means for you. Going back to the symbol of a bull you could feel fear, reverence, admiration, submissive, angry, awe, disgust.....the list is endless.
The client felt scared and frightened of the bull.

By breaking down the symbol into it's component parts it becomes easy to understand what it means. For the client, the symbol of a big, black bull represented his fear and anxiety of his own personal power.
The dream in it's entirety was about the client developing his own personal power, coming to terms with it and using it for his benefit in his life.
The reason feeling powerful was so fearful for the client was because he had grown up with a very powerful, scary and abusive father and had vowed to never be like him. Therefore, he had completely denied that he had a part of himself that was powerful.
The nightmare was bringing him an opportunity to resolve in his mind the issues he had with his father and also to acknowledge, and begin to intergrate, the powerful part of himself. Denying this part of himself had resulted in a general feeling of impotence and a long battle with depression which were both relieved considerably once he had understood and acknowledged his feelings.
What is this nightmare telling me I am scared of?
Nightmares are usually expressing deep feelings and thoughts that we are unconscious of - that is why they are so frightening - because they are bringing to our attention emotions that were perceived to be threatening and/or overwhelming at some point in the past.
This next statement may sound obvious but it surprising how many of us don't understand that our nightmare is telling us about something we are frightened of.
The main emotions we experience in nightmares are fear and anxiety.
The occurance of a nightmare is a sign that you are now ready to deal with these emotions.
It can be difficult to access unconscious or subconscious emotions which is where a professional dream interpretation can come in useful. You can also find more information on this site about defence mechanisms and how to overcome them.
Nightmares help us heal old emotional wounds
If we were to ask ourselves what are the effects of nightmares, we could say that they give us an amazing opportunity for self knowledge and understanding and also the opportunity to overcome the issue and move forward in life. Nightmares give us the chance for deep healing to occur.
Physiological Disturbances
Nightmares can also occur when we have physiological disturbances while we are asleep. For instance being too hot, too cold, having a fever, having ingested a lot of alcohol or drugs or starting a new medication.
Four Step Technique to Interpreting a Nightmare
There are three main questions we need to ask when interpreting dream symbols in our nightmares. The first is:
A nightmare I interpreted recently featured a big black bull. The client couldn't understand why the bull was there, so I asked the question - why not a mouse, antelope or dog?
The reason it was a bull is because the dream was about the clients' fear of his own power and the bull symbolised that for him. No other symbol would have been right. Dream symbols are NOT RANDOM.
The second important question to ask yourself is:
2. What words/adjectives come to mind when I think of the symbol?
If we stay with the symbol of a bull as an example, words that may come to mind could range from strong, powerful and masculine to bullish, over confident and forceful.
The client above who used the words, "powerful" to describe what the bull symbolised for him.
The main thing to remember is that you can relate every adjective that you would use to descibe the symbol, to yourself, a part of yourself or a facet of your belief system.
The third question is:
3. What emotion/s do I feel when i think of this symbol?
